Bitcoin is pushing $80,000 as this edition goes out. The question crypto Twitter is asking: is this the breakout, or the trap? The onchain data has an opinion. Here are the five metrics I’m watching this week.

1. Reserve Risk: Back in the Green Zone

Reserve Risk measures whether long-term holders are being rewarded for their patience. When Bitcoin price is high but holders are still HODLing, Reserve Risk stays low. When they start selling into strength, it rises.

Right now, Reserve Risk is deep in the green zone: the same zone it occupied during the 2018–2019 bear market floor and the 2022 FTX capitulation bottom. The green zone historically signals that long-term holders have not been rewarded yet, meaning meaningful upside remains before the cohort that knows Bitcoin best starts distributing in earnest.

At $79,891 BTC, Reserve Risk has not even begun to approach the orange zone where cycle tops have historically clustered. In 2021, the metric entered orange in February and stayed elevated until the November peak. We are nowhere near that reading today.

What to watch this week: Reserve Risk turns concerning only when it enters the orange/red zone, which requires a sustained price rally with LTH selling participation. Neither condition is present.

2. aSOPR vs bSOPR: The Split That Tells You Who’s in Control

SOPR measures whether coins are being moved at a profit or a loss. But aSOPR and bSOPR split this signal in a way that reveals market structure. aSOPR covers all spent UTXOs. bSOPR filters to coins held at least one hour: a cleaner read on deliberate holder behavior.

Both aSOPR and bSOPR have been above 1.0 for three consecutive weeks. That alignment matters. Bear market bounces break this alignment quickly. The April recovery has not. Three weeks of sustained above-1.0 SOPR across both measures is structurally different from the bear bounces seen in Q2 2022 and Q1 2023.

When both measures track together above 1.0, the market is being moved by participants in profit who are acting deliberately, not forced liquidations or panic. The conviction signal is intact.

What to watch this week: A drop on both aSOPR and bSOPR simultaneously would signal a genuine sentiment shift. A dip on aSOPR while bSOPR holds is minor noise. Neither is occurring.

3. Bitcoin Cycle Top Indicators: All 7 Still Quiet

The seven Bitcoin cycle top indicators are a combined framework covering derivatives, onchain behavior, miner activity, and holder cohort analysis. In prior cycles, these indicators fired together in sequence over weeks. That clustering is the signal.

As of this week, none of the seven are in warning territory: MVRV Z-Score is in the value zone. Funding rates are near zero. Exchange reserves are at 7-year lows. Coin Days Destroyed is suppressed. STH-SOPR is above 1.0 for three weeks. Pi Cycle Top convergence is far off. Reserve Risk is deep green.

In November 2021, five of these seven were in warning territory simultaneously before the peak. In April 2021, the same clustering appeared ahead of the May correction. The data gets crowded before price peaks. Right now, the field is empty.

What to watch this week: The first indicator to enter warning territory on a sustained basis is the early signal. Watch MVRV Z-Score and Funding Rates first: these tend to move earliest in euphoric phases. Both are benign.

4. MVRV Z-Score: Value Zone at $80K

MVRV Z-Score compares Bitcoin’s market cap to its realized cap and expresses the difference in standard deviations. The result: a normalized gauge of whether BTC is over or undervalued relative to the aggregate cost basis of all coins in circulation.

The remarkable fact about the current reading is that BTC has run from $65,000 in January to nearly $80,000 today: a 23% gain, and the MVRV Z-Score is still in the value zone. Realized price has also been rising as coins moved at higher cost bases during the accumulation phase. The gap between market cap and realized cap, in standard deviation terms, has not stretched into overvalued territory.

Every cycle top in Bitcoin’s history has seen the MVRV Z-Score enter the red zone above approximately 7. The current reading is well below that threshold. The 2019 mid-cycle peak at $13,800 BTC occurred with MVRV Z-Score still in neutral range, and that cycle still had another year before the realized top.

What to watch this week: Watch for the MVRV Z-Score approaching 3.0 as BTC tests $80K and above. That is not a sell signal: it marks the transition from value zone to neutral zone. There are multiple phases between neutral and red.

5. Open Interest: Rising Without the Leverage Spike

Open Interest in Bitcoin perpetual futures has been rising as price recovers, but funding rates remain near zero. This combination is the clean version of derivatives market growth.

In the 2021 bull cycle, the danger signal was not Open Interest rising: it was Open Interest rising while funding rates ran 0.05–0.08% per 8-hour interval for weeks on end. That meant the market was crowded long, paying to stay long, and fragile to any reversal. Today, both longs and shorts exist in roughly equal measure. This is not the setup that precedes violent corrections driven by overleveraged longs.

What to watch this week: If funding rates push above 0.01–0.02% per 8 hours and sustain while Open Interest continues rising, that would represent early derivatives crowding. Worth monitoring as BTC approaches the $80K–$85K range where leverage tends to build.

The Week Ahead: What the Data Says

Bitcoin is approaching $80,000 with the cleanest onchain setup of any comparable price level in recent cycles. Reserve Risk in the green zone. aSOPR and bSOPR both above 1.0 and aligned. Seven cycle top indicators collectively quiet. MVRV Z-Score in value territory. Open Interest growing without derivatives crowding.

This is not what cycle tops look like. This is what mid-cycle constructive phases look like. The “Sell in May” seasonal narrative dominating crypto Twitter this week is not visible in any of these five data sets. Onchain data doesn’t read a calendar.

Watch the MVRV Z-Score as BTC tests and holds above $80K. If price breaks and holds, the Z-Score will begin moving toward neutral territory. That is a signal the value zone is ending, not a sell signal. There are multiple phases between neutral and red. Watch the data, not the calendar.
