This is the last Weekly Onchain Watch of July, and it doubles as a bridge into August. The month played out as a consolidation after June’s sharp drawdown, with price range-bound in the low-to-mid $60Ks while on-chain conditions stayed largely constructive. These five metrics are the ones worth carrying into the new month, along with the threshold that makes each one meaningful.

1. Coinbase Premium (US/institutional demand)

The Coinbase Premium measures the price gap between Bitcoin on Coinbase and on offshore venues. Because Coinbase is a primary on-ramp for US institutions, a positive premium often signals American or institutional buyers stepping in, while a negative one points to selling pressure from that cohort.

The signal to watch is whether the premium holds positive or flips negative as August begins. A steady positive premium during consolidation suggests real demand from larger US buyers. A persistent discount would hint that domestic appetite is cooling. Our Coinbase Premium guide explains how to read it.

2. Spot ETF Flows

Spot Bitcoin ETF flows track whether regulated funds are seeing net creations or redemptions, a direct line into traditional-finance demand. Sustained inflows pull coins off the open market into fund custody, while outflows do the opposite and add supply back.

The threshold to watch is the multi-day trend rather than any single day. A run of net inflows reinforces the accumulation story and supports the reserve drain seen on exchanges. A stretch of consistent outflows would be a notable headwind worth respecting, especially if it coincides with reserves rising.

3. Short-Term Holder MVRV (cost basis)

Short-Term Holder MVRV compares price to the average cost basis of recent buyers. When the ratio is above 1, new holders are in profit, and below 1 they are underwater. It is a sharp read on whether the most reactive cohort is comfortable or stressed.

The signal to watch is whether STH-MVRV holds above 1 as support. Staying above that line means recent buyers are above water and less likely to panic-sell, which steadies the market. A drop below it flags stress that can feed selling. See the STH-MVRV explainer for the detail.

4. Accumulation Trend Score

The Accumulation Trend Score combines wallet size and buying conviction into one figure showing whether the market overall is accumulating or distributing. Readings closer to 1 indicate broad, conviction-led accumulation, while readings near 0 point to distribution.

The threshold to watch is whether the score leans toward accumulation as July hands off to August. A score tilted toward accumulation through a flat market is a quiet but meaningful vote of confidence from holders of size. Our Accumulation Trend Score guide shows how it is constructed.

5. Exchange Reserves

Exchange reserves remain the anchor signal. Through June and into July, the steady drain of coins off trading platforms reflected accumulation and a shrinking pool of immediately sellable supply. It was one of the structural reasons the June drawdown did not deepen.

The signal to watch into August is simple continuation. As long as reserves keep falling or hold flat, sell-side pressure stays contained. A clear reversal, with coins flooding back onto exchanges, would be the first crack worth taking seriously and a reason to reassess the constructive read.

What to watch

Carrying into August, the cleanest picture comes from these five lining up: a positive Coinbase Premium, steady ETF inflows, STH-MVRV holding above 1, an accumulation-leaning trend score, and exchange reserves still draining. That combination would describe demand meeting a shrinking float, the kind of setup that has supported past consolidations. If several break the other way at once, the framework says pay closer attention. As always, this is a lens for reading the network, not financial advice.
