September 2026 was a month where Washington mattered more than the blockchain. Bitcoin started the month around $77.6K, pushed toward $80K by mid-month, then gave back ground after the Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act on September 15 by a single vote, 49 to 50. The same day, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded roughly $450 million of outflows and spot Ether ETFs had their worst day in months. A Federal Reserve decision followed on September 16 with the 10-year Treasury yield near 5% and headline inflation at 3.4%. None of that is onchain data, but all of it shaped how onchain participants behaved. Here is what to focus on as Q4 opens.

The headline: a breakout tested by policy

The late-August breakout took Bitcoin out of a range that had held since June. September tested whether that move had real support or was mostly driven by flows. The price action alone cannot answer that. Holder behaviour can. If long-term holders stayed put and coins kept leaving exchanges through the September pullback, the breakout survived its first real test. If older coins woke up and exchange balances rebuilt, the market was using the rally as an exit.

Long-term holders

Long-term holders are the cohort that sells into strength at cycle peaks and absorbs supply during drawdowns. Watch LTH-SOPR and long-term holder supply for signs of heavy distribution. A market still trading well below its prior-year level, as Bitcoin was through September, would not normally show aggressive long-term holder selling. A surprise spike would be the most important warning in this whole update.

Short-term holders and the $75K area

The mid-$70Ks became the key battleground in September. A large share of coins changed hands between the late-August breakout and the mid-September high, which means a meaningful cost basis cluster sits in that area. The UTXO realized price distribution is the tool for seeing exactly where that supply sits. Holding above it keeps recent buyers in profit. Losing it convincingly tends to trigger capitulation from the least committed holders.

Exchange flows and ETF demand

Exchange reserves and ETF flows tell two halves of the same story. Reserves show whether existing holders are preparing to sell. ETF flows show whether new institutional money is still arriving. The summer rally had both working in its favour. September broke the ETF inflow streak. Whether October restores it is probably the biggest single swing factor for Q4.

Valuation

MVRV Z-Score and the Puell Multiple both remained far from the extremes that have historically marked cycle tops through September. That leaves room in both directions. It means the market was not structurally overheated, but it also means valuation alone does not provide a floor.

Sentiment

The Fear and Greed Index swung from Greed at 69 to Neutral at 51 in a single day after the Senate vote. Sentiment that shifts that fast usually reflects positioning more than conviction. Neutral readings after a sharp drop are often a better environment for building positions than Greed readings near a local high.

What to watch in the first half of October

Three things. First, whether weekly ETF flows turn back positive. Second, whether exchange reserves keep falling. Third, whether price holds above the short-term holder cost basis in the mid-$70Ks. Two of three pointing the right way would keep the recovery thesis intact. All three failing would argue that the August breakout is being unwound.

This update was prepared before the quarter opened, so it does not quote the September close. The checkpoints hold regardless of where exactly the month ended.

Common questions

Why does a Senate vote move Bitcoin? Market structure legislation affects which institutions can hold and trade digital assets and how. Delays push that access further out, which changes flow expectations.

Is Bitcoin in a bull or bear market? Through September it was recovering from a summer low but still trading well below its level a year earlier. The onchain data describes a recovery phase, not a confirmed new trend.

What would change the picture fastest? A sustained return of ETF inflows, or a sharp rise in long-term holder selling. Either would move the balance quickly.
