A Bitcoin ETF is a regulated fund that trades on a stock exchange and tracks the price of Bitcoin, so an investor can get exposure through a normal brokerage account instead of buying and storing the asset directly. The label covers two very different products, and the difference matters more than most headlines suggest.

Futures ETFs vs. spot ETFs

The first generation of Bitcoin ETFs held CME Bitcoin futures contracts, not Bitcoin itself. That structure introduces contango and roll costs, meaning the fund can quietly underperform the actual price of Bitcoin over time as expiring contracts get rolled into new ones. A spot Bitcoin ETF instead holds real Bitcoin in custody, so its price tracks the underlying asset far more closely, with the main drag being the fund’s management fee.

Creation and redemption: the part that actually matters

Spot ETF shares are not created by the fund manager buying Bitcoin on a whim. They are created and redeemed by authorized participants, large institutional trading firms that have a direct relationship with the fund. When investor demand pushes the ETF’s share price above the value of its underlying Bitcoin, an authorized participant can create new shares: they deliver cash (or in some structures, Bitcoin) to the fund, the fund buys or receives the equivalent Bitcoin, and new shares are issued and sold into the market. When demand falls and the share price dips below the underlying value, the reverse happens: shares are redeemed and retired, and Bitcoin (or its cash equivalent) flows back out.

This mechanism is what keeps an ETF’s price close to net asset value, and it is also why ETF “flows” are a real, trackable signal rather than a marketing number. Custody: where the coins actually sit

Spot ETF issuers use a small number of specialized custodians to hold the underlying Bitcoin in cold storage, segregated from the custodian’s own assets. This is a meaningfully different risk profile from a retail exchange account: the coins are institutionally insured and audited, but the investor never holds a private key and never can. That tradeoff, giving up self-custody for regulatory wrapper and brokerage convenience, is the core decision every ETF buyer is implicitly making. What ETF flows do and do not tell you

Daily flow numbers get quoted as though they were a sentiment gauge, and they are only partly that. A single day of net inflows can be one large allocator rebalancing rather than a wave of new demand, and a single day of outflows can be an authorized participant unwinding an arbitrage position rather than investors giving up. The signal lives in the trend across weeks, not in any one print.

The second limitation is more subtle. ETF flows tell you about demand arriving through one regulated channel. They say nothing about the much larger pool of coins held directly, and they say nothing about what those holders are doing. That is why flow data is best read next to exchange reserves and MVRV Z-Score, which together describe supply availability and aggregate cost basis. Flows describe one door into the market. The fee and custody footprint

Because creation and redemption happen in large blocks and custodians hold coins in a small number of addresses, ETF activity leaves a thin but readable onchain trace. Large transfers between known custodial addresses cluster around creation days. Analysts track those addresses precisely because they let you sanity check reported flows against settlement on the chain itself, which is one of the few places in traditional finance where the audit trail is public by default.

Because ETF custodians publish their wallet addresses (or they get identified through onchain analytics firms), large creation days are visible as sizable BTC transfers into known custodial addresses. That is a rare case where a purely financial-market structure produces a clean onchain footprint, and it is part of why watching custody balances alongside the MVRV Z-Score gives a fuller picture than either signal alone: one shows who is buying through the regulated wrapper, the other shows what the market as a whole has paid for its coins.

Does buying a spot ETF mean you own bitcoin? You own a share representing an economic claim on bitcoin held by the fund. You do not hold keys, and you cannot move or spend the underlying coins.

Do ETFs take supply off the market permanently? Not permanently. Redemptions can return coins to circulation, which is why net flows rather than cumulative holdings are the more honest number to watch.

Why do futures ETFs underperform over long periods? Rolling expiring contracts forward in a market that is usually in contango costs money every roll, and that cost compounds. Spot funds avoid it entirely.
