Bitcoin spent the back half of August moving out of the range it had held since early summer, and by the start of September price was sitting near multi-month highs around the high $70Ks after roughly two months in the low-to-mid $60Ks. Three weeks on, the question is no longer whether the move happened but whether the structure underneath it has held. Here are five metrics worth checking this week.
1. Exchange reserves
The steady drain in exchange reserves was the defining supply story of the summer, and it is the first thing to check after any sharp price move. The question is simple: did the rally pull coins back onto exchanges? A visible rebuild in balances during an advance is the market telling you that some holders used strength as an exit. Reserves continuing to fall while price holds is a much healthier configuration, because it means the coins that moved changed hands without returning to the sellable pool.
2. Short-term holder SOPR
STH-SOPR measures whether recently acquired coins are being spent at a profit or a loss. After a fast advance, this cohort is where the fragility usually sits, because buyers from the last few weeks have the least conviction and the smallest cushion. Readings that stay above 1.0 on pullbacks suggest recent buyers are holding rather than panicking. A decisive break below 1.0 says the newest money is capitulating, which historically precedes deeper retracements more often than not.
3. MVRV Z-Score
A move of this size mechanically pushes MVRV Z-Score higher, because market value has risen while realized value, the aggregate cost basis, moves slowly. What matters is how far into its historical range the reading has travelled. A rally that leaves the Z-Score in a neutral band is a different animal from one that pushes it toward the zone that has historically marked cycle extremes. This is the single best check on whether an advance has run ahead of its own foundations.
4. Miner behaviour and the Puell Multiple
Higher price means higher miner revenue in dollar terms without any change in issuance, which is exactly what the Puell Multiple is built to capture. Elevated readings mean miners are earning well above their recent norm, and historically that has coincided with increased miner selling as operations take the opportunity to build reserves or pay down debt. It is worth pairing with the Hash Ribbon, which tells you whether hash rate is expanding or contracting alongside that revenue picture.
5. Realized cap direction
Realized cap rises when coins move at higher prices, which is the closest thing onchain data has to a measure of genuine capital entering the network. Price can rise on thin volume without realized cap moving much, and that kind of advance tends not to stick. A rally accompanied by a meaningful climb in realized cap is one where real money changed hands at the new levels, which gives the move a base to fall back on.
Reading the five together
No single reading here decides anything. The useful exercise is checking whether they agree. Falling reserves, STH-SOPR holding above 1.0, MVRV in a neutral band and realized cap climbing describe an advance with structure underneath it. Reserves rebuilding, STH-SOPR breaking down and realized cap flat describe a move that ran on positioning rather than capital, and those resolve downward more often. If you want to build this into a repeatable weekly routine, the free onchain tools guide covers where each of these can be pulled without a paid data subscription.
Common questions
How often should these be checked? Weekly is enough for all five. Onchain metrics are structural rather than tactical, and checking them daily mostly produces noise and overtrading.
What if the metrics disagree with each other? That is normal and it is information. Disagreement usually means the market is in transition rather than trending, which is a reason to reduce confidence rather than to pick whichever metric agrees with your position.
Do these work the same way on altcoins? The concepts translate but the data quality does not. Bitcoin has the deepest and cleanest onchain history; most altcoin equivalents are noisier and have far fewer cycles to calibrate against.
