Thesis
Zcash’s ten-fold rally in 2025 marked the first measurable comeback for privacy coins since the 2017 cycle. But while prices soared, on-chain data paints a mixed picture, strong momentum in shielded transactions, but thin fundamental liquidity and heavy speculative leverage.
The Price Shock: 700% in Three Months
According to CoinGecko, ZEC traded between $620 and $728 in early November 2025, with a 24-hour trading volume above $2 billion and a total market capitalization exceeding $10 billion. This represents a more than 700% increase since September 2025, when ZEC hovered near $80.
Volume across centralized exchanges (CEXs) spiked concurrently: Coingape and TradingView data show over $50 million in short liquidations within a 48-hour window as price momentum turned parabolic.
2025 became the year privacy coins returned to front-page relevance, but through speculation, not adoption.
The On-Chain Story: Real Privacy Usage Is Growing
While the rally’s pace suggested pure hype, Zcash’s on-chain metrics actually improved in measurable ways. CoinDesk reported on November 5 that:
- Around 25–30% of ZEC’s circulating supply now resides in shielded (private) addresses.
- Approximately one-third of all network transactions involve the shielded pool.
This is the highest privacy penetration in Zcash’s history: evidence that at least part of the price action reflected renewed usage of its core technology, not just leveraged bets.
Tokenomics and Supply Mechanics
The Zcash blockchain’s issuance model, defined in ZIP-1015, allocates block rewards as follows:
- 80% to miners
- 12% to a lockbox (protocol treasury)
- 8% to Zcash Community Grants
Each block currently rewards 1.5625 ZEC (~75-second block time), producing roughly 1,800 ZEC/day (~$1.1M at $620). The next programmed halving will reduce this to 0.78125 ZEC, or about 900 ZEC/day (~$560k) in new supply.
While several outlets (e.g., Bitget Research) cited a November 2025 halving, official Electric Coin Company documentation indicates a four-year cadence, meaning the next actual halving event may fall closer to 2028. This distinction is crucial, markets traded a narrative halving, not a scheduled one.
Market Composition and Speculative Flows
Data from Dune Analytics dashboards and CEX liquidation trackers show the majority of ZEC’s 2025 trading volume occurred on centralized derivatives platforms, not DEXs. The $50M+ in forced short closures between November 2–6 amplified the breakout.
DeFi-native exposure to ZEC remains limited: DeFiLlama tracks minimal liquidity pools or lending markets integrating privacy coins, underscoring that ZEC’s liquidity is primarily exchange-based rather than on-chain.
Why It Matters
Zcash’s surge highlighted the return of the privacy narrative within crypto’s broader maturity phase. However, the underlying data suggests a split reality:
- Speculative strength: Parabolic CEX volume, $2B+ daily turnover, and short squeezes.
- Fundamental growth: Record shielded usage and on-chain anonymity activity.
- Structural weakness: Limited DeFi integration and reliance on centralized liquidity.
2025 reminded investors that narratives move prices, but on-chain data reveals what’s real.
