Bitcoin surged toward $74,000 on Thursday, March 12 — its highest level in over a month — following comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent about steps to cap rising oil prices. The move built on an already-strengthening week, and Bitcoin has now gained roughly 11% in March alone, on pace to break a five-month losing streak.
The price action is notable. But the onchain picture underneath it is what tells you whether this move has structural support — or whether it’s a leverage-driven bounce waiting to unwind.
What the Onchain Data Shows Right Now
The most important floor to understand right now is the realized price, currently sitting at approximately $55,019. With Bitcoin trading near $73,000–$74,000, that gap has expanded to roughly 33% — meaning the aggregate cost basis of every Bitcoin holder is now well below market price. The entire holder base is in profit in aggregate. That’s a meaningful structural shift from the $66,000–$68,000 range we were trading in just two weeks ago.
ETF flows are also telling a cleaner story. After a two-week outflow streak, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $450 million in net inflows over the three days ending March 12, with BlackRock’s IBIT leading. This reversal of institutional outflows — combined with MicroStrategy’s reported purchase of over 4,100 BTC on March 12 alone — represents real spot demand absorbing supply, not just derivatives repositioning.
Funding rates in perpetual futures had been negative for the longest stretch since the 2022 bear market bottom — a signal that the majority of leveraged traders were positioned short. When funding is deeply negative and price starts moving up, shorts get squeezed, accelerating the move. That’s part of what happened Thursday. But the ETF inflow data suggests some genuine spot buying behind it, not just a technical squeeze.
What to Watch Next
The $75,000 level is the immediate resistance zone that multiple analysts have flagged — it’s where last week’s rally stalled and where a cluster of leveraged positions sit. A clean break and hold above $75K would shift the short-term technical structure meaningfully. A rejection there and a return toward $68,000–$70,000 would still be structurally intact given where realized price sits.
The onchain metrics worth monitoring through this move — realized price, STH-SOPR, and exchange reserve flows — are exactly what the weekly Onchain Pulse tracks every Monday. This week’s Pulse #3 covers the broader cycle positioning context including the Pi Cycle Top indicator and where multiple valuation models stand simultaneously.
For now, the onchain picture is more constructive than the price alone suggests. The floor held. Spot buyers came back. The question is whether they stay.
